If your dog gets at all anxious or motion sick during your travels, I would highly recommend you purchasing a Thundershirt. You will be SO glad that you did!
I had no idea that dogs got motion sick until we adopted Muffin. Perhaps prior to us adopting her, car rides may not have been so pleasant. Trips to the vet or to another Adoption Day at a local pet store may have attributed to car rides and her anxiety. For our trip to Cambria (click here to read more), we had no idea about the Thundershirt. We also didn’t realize the consequence of her motion sickness. The ride o Cambria was about 3 hours and quite honestly, we were all getting used to each other since it had only been 5 months since we adopted her. We stopped frequently and always had a towel nearby just in case. But with a trip to Convict Lake planned with the family this November, I researched homeopathic remedies to this issue. That’s when we came across the Thundershirt.
At first, the name may not make sense but this “shirt” was created for dogs that get spooked at the sound of thunder. Simply put, it is layers of jersey material that has velcro so it wraps around the dog’s body. If you imagine a swaddle for babies, it’s kind of like that. The wrap and the velcro make the dog feel secure and less anxious. Totally makes sense right! The video’s on their website were pretty convincing AND paying just under $40 without any drugs was surely worth a try. Worse case scenario, the wrap didnt’ work, atleast she would be kept warm.
I must say that putting on the Thundershirt took a bit of time but once you know how it fits on your dog, it’s easy breezy. We put it on Muffin and purposely took her on trips around town. Granted “around town” was to the local park and eateries but it was quite amazing! No sign of motion sickeness! Now it could be that Muffin is realizing that we are her owners and is getting comfortable around us but man, it was great! To date, no problems! The real test is our trip to Convict Lake. Stay tuned! I would highly recommend this product especially if your pup gets car sick or is anxious. On their website, it states that it’s great for dogs that get scared during the 4th of July and firework season as well.

I do not work for the Thundershirt company and this blog entry is merely just my personal experience.
